How to Save Money

How to Save Money – Whether You’ve Got A lot or A Little

How to Save Money

Most of us have an issue when it comes to how to save money. Especially with the new year, knowing how to save money is super important! Even if we can provide for ourselves, we probably have to cut down on certain things to pay our necessary bills. I have compiled a list of tips that I have used and given to friends on how to save money, and I must say they are pretty useful. Check them out!

1. SAVE ALL OF YOUR LOOSE CHANGE

I’ve started keeping all the loose change from my purse, my fiance’s wallet, my fiancé’s car, my car, etc. We toss loose change into the bottom of our purses and cup holders in the car, and rarely fish it out to pay for things. Especially with the new parking meters using cards, we rarely use change for that. Start putting all of your loose change in a plastic baggy instead of the bottom of your purse or jean pockets. You’ll be surprised at how much money is just sitting around your house! From just a week or so of doing this, I ended up with $18.00 in spare change. Pretty awesome.

2. RECYCLE

Running down to your local recycling station can be a drag sometimes, but if you can make a couple bucks back on what you’ve spent, AND help the environment, it sounds like a pretty good deal to me. According to the Californians Against Waste over 200,000 TONS of plastic bottles are land filled each year. That’s a horrendous number. You can help out the environment, and make a little extra cash as well.

3. SELL YOUR UNWANTED GOODS, OR DONATE THEM TO CHARITY

Sell unwanted goods on eBay or Craigslist. Even if you don’t get much for it, anything is a profit if it’s just sitting around your house. If you can’t sell it, donate it to charity! You can write off charitable donations on your taxes, so that may save you some money once tax season rolls around.

4. DON’T TOP OFF AT THE GAS PUMP

Topping off at the gas pump only wastes your money. According to the Environmental Protection Agency, topping off wastes your money in more ways than one. For one, gas needs to expand. If you top off and your tank is too full, it may impede it’s ability to function properly, thus resulting in a poorly functioning vehicle that could damage your car’s MPG. You also risk paying for gas that gets sucked back into the gas stations pump valve because your tank is already full.

5. TAKE ADVANTAGE OF NATURAL LIGHT!

I have started using the sunlight to my full advantage when I’m home during the day. Instead of turning on lights, I open up all the windows, even sometimes the front door minus the screen (if the weather permits) and let the sun shine in! This saves a ton of money on my electric bill, and natural light also provides health benefits.

If you do use artificial light, use energy saving light bulbs.

7. SHOP FOR GROCERIES A WEEK AT A TIME:

Although we hate to admit it, most of us waste a ton of food that gets hidden in the bottom of our refrigerators. Start shopping for groceries a week or two at a time and planning a menu (unless of course it’s meat that you can freeze and store for later) This way, you know exactly what you’re cooking, and if you’re in the mood for something else you can always run to the store and grab it while everything gets eaten before it goes bad.

8. LEAVE THE HOUSE EARLY

The less you have to rush, the less you have to push that pedal to the metal. Leaving earlier gives you more time to drive to your destination, thus reducing the amount of gas you’re using per trip. According the a recent study, you can get 35% better gas mileage by simply slowing down your driving. The slower you drive, the less you will have to stop abruptly, and the slower you take off will help you save on gas as well.

9. MAKE YOUR OWN COFFEE

I love my Starbucks, trust me. But spending that $4.50+ every day really adds up. Even if you only hit Starbucks the 5 days a week you are working, that’s roughly $90.00+ a month and roughly $1080.00+ a year! Brew at home and get multiple uses out of a $10.00 coffee machine and a $10.00 bag of coffee grounds. Your money goes a lot further if you brew at home, and you can still get the lovely taste of Starbucks by purchasing some of their coffee grounds on Amazon. A lot cheaper than buying in the store.

10. FIND STREET PARKING

If you work at a place that doesn’t offer parking, or go somewhere often that doesn’t either, look for street parking instead. Where I work, once my shift is over the underground parking ends up being $13.00. I work between 4-5 shifts a day, so if you add that up that’s $260.00 a month! Just leave a little early, drive slower, and park on the street. You can get a nice pre-work jog in while you’re at it.

These are just a few tips that I have compiled over the years on how to save money. Try them out! You may find that they are very helpful in saving you some cash!

Do you have any tips on how to save money? Or do you try any of the ones above?

  25. I used to get salads at Subway every day during my lunch break. At around $10 per salad I spent $50 a week on bad quality food. That’s $200 a month! So I started preparing my own meals at home, which saved a huge amount of money and is a lot healthier for me.
