Travel: Must See in Cambodia

Cambodia is such an incredible country. Although it is ridden by poverty in some areas, it was still a remarkable place and I recommend it to anyone traveling to Thailand or anywhere in Southeast Asia. I arrived in Siem Reap on October 11, 2014. Here are the activities, hotels, and everything else I believe is a must see in Siem Reap, Cambodia.

Upon arriving, we landed in a TINY amazing little airport! Take a look…

Hotel

Hotel

We only stayed in one Siem Reap hotel during our honeymoon, but we had such an amazing experience I just have to include it here. The name of the hotel is The Golden Temple, and from the ambiance to the food to the service, everything was remarkable. I have never been treated so nicely or been given such amazing treatment as I have here. The concierges and waitstaff and spa staff all use American names, and they are always happy to see you. You’ll receive a lemongrass cold towel upon arriving back at the hotel after a hot trip in the sun, and they’ll offer you cold tea, fruits, and seasoned peanuts as a snack.

The Temples

Temples

Angkor Wat is simply incredible! I didn’t think I would enjoy the temples as much as I did, simply because I’m not religious and thought they were going to be similar to churches or mosques. I was wrong. These temples are simply amazing, stunning, and stretch far off into the beautiful Cambodian countryside.

The Markets

Market

The markets, however stinky, were AMAZING! I’m a lover of Farmer’s Markets, and these were legitimate Farmer’s Markets. Many of these were wet markets, so there were fresh pig heads and even fish moving around on the floor! These fish were caught just hours before they were taken to be sold, so you know that everything you get here is FRESH. Beyond that, there were spices, tea, clothes, aromatherapy oils, household goods, and other fun knickknacks to check out. These are a must see!

Teaching Restaurants

New Haven 1

There are a few teaching restaurants here that cater to uneducated individuals who need help in the work field. These restaurants teach teens and adults to be servers and bartenders, cooks, and the like in order to run a restaurant. Not only is it great to help out a good cause, but the food is amazing!

Activities

– Phare Cambodian Circus

Phare

This circus was so much fun, and it helps impoverished individuals be a part of something creative and artistic. The performance was amazing and the acrobatics were quite impressive. This is held in a very small tent and they are currently looking for a new home, but I had a great time and enjoyed every last bit of it. If you’re in Siem Reap, track this circus down because it’s worth it.

– Temple Tour

Tour

Although we did have a driver, my husband and I decided not to get a tour guide, but looking back now I wish that we would have. It would’ve  been nice to have someone tell us all of the cool facts related to the temples and their history. Either way the temples are a must see.

– The War Museum

War Museum 1

Although this museum is fairly sad because it is based on the civil war in that area, it was an eye opening experience for me. Being American, I hadn’t heard about this war even though it ended around the time I was 3 or 4 years old. America played a role in this war and the fallout was devastating to the Cambodian people. It’s always nice to hear some history and get some perspective rather than just being oblivious and enjoying my vacation.

– New Haven Teaching Restaurant

New Haven 2

The New Haven Teaching Restaurant is a restaurant with employees who are learning english and are learning about the hospitality industry. Check out the full post here.

– New Hope Cambodia

New Hope 1

New Hope Cambodia is a charity organization that runs a school, a medical clinic, and a restaurant for families suffering from poverty, health complications and a lack of education. The families in the town are given food with the stipulation that the children go to school on a daily basis. (Full post coming soon)
